Florida Frontiersmen

History 101

I thought this might be a good time to reflect back on our clubs rich history and to pass some of it along to our new members.

As Roger mentioned at the meeting when we are having a vote on something at a meeting you will almost always hear a fellow Frontiersmen add "Nay ,for Frances". Roger explained that Frances was a club member that always voted no on everything. Sometimes even on his own motion!

Just reading the street signs on our property is a club history lesson. Most streets are named for club members that have passed from this life. Nelson Aurich, Charlie Knight, and Poppa Joe just to name a few. Some are named for faithful Alafia Ranger Horses. Chester, Fancy and Kelso. We are surrounded by club history and traditions.

Did You Know?

That the Frontiersmen started shooting in March of 1972 on a field between the two police ranges in St. Petersburg?

They shot in Pinellas County until July of 1984, and only shot on Sundays?

The first Alafia River Rendezvous that the Florida Frontiersmen sponsored was in 1985 and was also an Indian Powwow? It was called the, “The First Alafia River Rendezvous and Powwow.” The event attracted 172 total camps.

The Florida Frontiersmen shot at the FOP Range outside of Brandon in 1984?

The Florida Frontiersmen had a 400 yard range at their Peace Rive Range and sponsored an event called the "1885 Buffalo Shoot?” It was a black powder cartridge shoot and was held quarterly.

The name Florida Frontiersmen was thought up by a woman? Joanne Markey suggested the name of the new club,” The Florida Frontiersmen Muzzle Loading Club of St. Petersburg,” in 1972.
